Digital Marketing in Sports: Cristiano Ronaldo Wins

This month in Football we will find out who was the best player of 2013. Will it be Lionel Messi again? Or will Cristiano Ronaldo finally beat him? When it comes to Digital Marketing it seems as if the Portugese star player of Real Madrid is beating Messi already. That is if we talk Twitter followers. Ronaldo has over 23 million followers whereas Lionel Messi ‘only’ comes to a little over 900.000. On Facebook Ronaldo has over 67 million likes, Messi reaches to 51 million.

Sports is the ultimate industry to use social media and to ‘do’ Digital Marketing. And this infographic shows that.

Interesting stats from Ecal here Bas, and nicely designed too. Digital marketing for sports is hugely important, because with the cost of attending sporting events ever-increasing, it’s important for fans to still be in touch and feel part of their team and favorite stars. Ronaldo et al, or their PR people should I say, have identified this and taken advantage – and there’s still huge room for growth too. For example, Ronaldo has launched his own app-based social network, allowing fans to create, upload and share ronny-based content, as well as talk about him 24/7.
