SES pre-show speaker interviews: Mel Carson (@melcarson)

17th February 2011

As mediapartner of SES London 2011 we’ll be bringing you everything about the conference you can possibly think off. For that we’ve already set up our special conference page where all the content surrounding SES London 2011 will be gathered. One of the things you can find there is this series, which we are starting today. Going up to the conference we are going to ‘warm you up’ a bit with about a dozen interviews with speakers at SES London. What sessions are they on, what are they talking about and what sessions are they looking forward to. You’ll find the answers in this series.

In this interview we talk to somebody who is always a guarantee for a happy face on the SES shows: Mel Carson. Microsoft’s Community Manager at Microsoft Advertising is also becoming a dad in the summer, plus he is moving to the US. All the more reasons to look him up and have a chat with him at SES London.

What session are you speaking on?

Social Media & the Marketing Mix

What will be the focus of your presentation(s)?

The focus will be around how important a social veneer across all marketing efforts can really boost engagement and discussion about your business and drive sales. We wrote in January about how “social is this internet, it’s what you do with the media that counts” – see number 4 in the Microsoft Advertising Digital Dozen – this has really resonated with advertisers as they slowly realise that social isn’t just about Facebook and Twitter and that there are other media they need to embrace like display, rich media, video and, of course, search.

What session are you looking forward to seeing yourself?

All of them! I love SES London. I’ve been going for 7 years and always learn something new!

What is the biggest tip you can give attendees of SES London?

Have a plan of what sessions you’re going to attend. Don’t just roll up and browse the agenda. Really have a think about what your goals for attending are and tailor your session-going accordingly. Also, don’t end up in a bar with Dave Naylor on the 1st evening……the rest of the week will be a write off! 😉
